Line breaks are not counted as characters. An emoji counts as one character.

How to use

  1. Type or paste text into the box and every number above updates as you go.
  2. Use “Characters” when a limit includes spaces, and “Characters (no spaces)” when it does not.
  3. Check “UTF-8 bytes” for database or API size limits. “Bytes (CJK = 2)” counts Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters as two bytes, as some legacy systems and SMS do.
  4. Your text is never sent to a server, so it is safe to count private drafts.

FAQ

Does the character count include spaces?

The first number includes spaces and the second one excludes them. Most essay and form limits count spaces, but check the instructions you were given.

How are words counted?

Words are detected with your browser’s language-aware word segmentation, so it also works for languages written without spaces, such as Japanese and Chinese.

Why do emoji count as one character?

Some emoji are made of several code points. This tool counts what you see on screen, so a family emoji or a flag counts as a single character.
