How to use

  1. Future value is P × (1 + r ÷ n)^(n × t), where n is how many times a year interest is added. Each deposit grows at the same rate from the day it goes in.
  2. Enter the starting amount, the annual rate and the number of years, then pick how often interest compounds.
  3. If you add money regularly, enter the deposit and how often you make it. Choose “Start of each period” when deposits earn interest from the day they are made.
  4. The chart and the table show how deposits and interest build up year by year. Hover or tap a bar to see that year’s numbers.

FAQ

What is the difference between simple and compound interest?

Simple interest is paid only on the original amount. Compound interest is also paid on interest you have already earned, so the gap grows the longer you stay invested.

What is the effective annual rate?

It is how much the balance actually grows in one year when interest is added several times a year, also called APY. A 5% rate compounded monthly works out to about 5.12% a year.

What is the rule of 72?

Divide 72 by the annual rate in percent to estimate how many years it takes to double your money. At 6% that is about 12 years. Use this calculator for a closer figure.

Are taxes, fees or inflation included?

No. This is a plain calculation before tax, fees and inflation, so the amount you actually receive may be lower.
