Protect PDF – Add a Password to a PDF

Add a PDF, choose an open password and press “Protect PDF”.

Your text and files never leave your browser — nothing is sent to a server.

Drop a PDF here or click to choose one

Lost passwords cannot be recovered, so write yours down. Print and copy restrictions depend on the PDF reader honouring them.

How to use

  1. Drop a PDF into the box or click to choose one.
  2. Type an open password. Only people who know it can open the file.
  3. To block printing, copying or editing, untick those options and set a separate permissions password.
  4. Press “Protect PDF” and download the locked file.

FAQ

Is my password sent anywhere?

No. Encryption happens in your browser, and neither the file nor the password goes over the internet.

What is the difference between the two passwords?

The open password is needed to view the file. The permissions password lifts printing, copying and editing restrictions. With only a permissions password, anyone can open the file but the restrictions stay on.

I forgot the password. Can you recover it?

No. This tool cannot recover passwords, and AES-256 is not practical to break. Keep an unprotected copy of important files.
