How to use
- Enter names in hiragana, katakana or romaji, one per line, with a space between family name and given name.
- Under the official rules, the か and た rows use plain consonants (가, 다) at the start of a word and aspirated ones (카, 타) elsewhere. Long vowels such as おう, ー and ō are not marked.
- ん becomes the final consonant ㄴ and っ becomes ㅅ on the previous syllable (はっとり → 핫토리).
- Switch to “Common usage” for the spellings often seen in fan translations, such as 타나카 and 츠바사.
FAQ
Why is Tanaka written 다나카 and not 타나카?
The National Institute of Korean Language rules write the Japanese k, t and ch sounds with plain consonants at the start of a word and with aspirated consonants in the middle or at the end, so Tanaka becomes 다나카.
Can it convert names written in kanji?
No. The same kanji can be read differently in different names, so the reading cannot be determined from kanji alone. Check the furigana and enter the name in kana or romaji.
Why does Kenichi come out as 게니치?
Romaji alone cannot tell ken-ichi (けんいち) from ke-nichi (けにち). Write Ken'ichi with an apostrophe, or enter it in kana, to get 겐이치.
