FAQ

How can text be italic without formatting?

These are Unicode characters, originally for mathematical notation, that are drawn slanted. The slant is part of the character itself, so it shows up even where formatting is not supported.

Are there accessibility or SEO issues?

Yes. Screen readers may not read them as normal words, and search engines may not match them to the plain spelling. Keep them for short decorative touches.

Does it work for every language?

Only the basic Latin letters Aโ€“Z and aโ€“z (and digits in some styles) have these variants. Accented letters, Cyrillic, Chinese, Japanese and Korean stay unchanged.
