Mojibake Fixer — Repair Garbled Text Encoding

Paste garbled text and the most likely original is shown first.

Your text and files never leave your browser — nothing is sent to a server.

How to use

  1. Paste the garbled text exactly as you see it — for example é, ’, 안녕 or 縺薙s.
  2. A label such as [Windows-1252 → UTF-8] means UTF-8 text was misread as Windows-1252. Candidates higher in the list are more likely to be right.
  3. Once you find the right one, turn on “Show only the best guess” to copy clean text.
  4. You can also paste hex bytes (C3 A9, %C3%A9 or \xC3\xA9) to see how they decode in each encoding.

FAQ

Why does text turn into é and ’?

Text is stored as bytes. If those bytes are read with a different encoding than the one used to save them — say UTF-8 read as Windows-1252 — each character turns into odd symbols. Reading the same bytes with the right encoding brings the text back.

Can it fix question marks or symbols?

No. Once a character has become ? or , its original bytes are gone. The rest of the text can still be repaired, and the lost spots stay as .

What if a whole file is garbled?

Reopen the file in your editor with a different encoding — most editors have a “Reopen with encoding” option. Use this tool for text that was already copied in its garbled form.
